The Participants

Yolande Brener

Yolande Brener is an English writer living in New York, author of the memoir, Holy Candy: Why I Joined A Cult And Married A Stranger.  She has worked as an actress, filmmaker, singer in an all-girl band, and disciple of an alleged Messiah.  Her essays have been published in New York Press, nerve.com, Strange Angels, State of Art and Harlem World.  Her film scripts have been funded by the British Film Institute and the Arts Council of Great Britain. She won the 2010 NYC Parks Department Poems in the Park competition.  Currently she works as a teleprompter operator, and is writing her first novel.

Emily Rubin

Emily Rubin is the author of STALINA (Mariner Books). In 2005 she co-founded Dirty Laundry: Loads of Prose and has since produced many readings and performances in laundromats all around the country. She is at work on a novel about radiation and short stories about the NYC in the 1980’s when she homesteaded a building in the Lower East Side. She stages television shows, and has worked for CBS, PBS, MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, VH1, FUSE, Food Network and many more.

Michael Sharick

Michael Sharick is originally from the Catskill Mountains. His work has appeared in Lumina and Conveyor Magazine. During the day he fixes microphones and coils cables, too many cables. He is an MFA candidate at the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers. He lives in Brooklyn.

Steven Van Patten

Steven Van Patten is a Brooklyn native, raised in Fort Greene and currently living in Crown Heights. After paying his dues as a production assistant for HBO Downtown Productions, Steven went on to stage manage a plethora of TV shows, including MTV’s Total Request Live, The Jeremy Kyle Show USA and Totally Biased w/ W. Kamau Bell. However, there was an idea haunting Steven. A storyline born from watching horror movies as a child and noticing a lack of diversity, and character development when people of color were employed. So after poring over historical research night after night, and traveling alone to various locales, including West Africa and Osaka, Japan, he wrote three installments of the Brookwater’s Curse, a vampire novel series. Expect a serial killer novel, entitled The Genius, to be released soon. www.Brookwaterscurse.com
